Schedule/Results | Roster | News | Archives Vikings place second in both men's and women's divisions at GNAC Indoor Championships
Feb. 18, 2008
NAMPA, Id. - Having the school's finest overall meet performance, Western Washington University placed second in both the men's and women's divisions at the fifth annual Great Northwest Athletic Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships on Monday at Jackson's Track in the Idaho Sports Center. It was the best finish in league history for the Viking women, who previously had not placed higher than fourth. The Western men, who won league titles in 2005 and 2006, have never finished lower than second. "This is definitely the best overall performance we're had here," said Western coach Pee Wee Halsell (21st year). "I'm very excited about our women and getting them back up to strength. The sprints and jumps really pulled us through there, but we needed every single point and I applaud the whole team." Seattle Pacific won its fifth straight crown in the women's division, finishing with 183 points to 109 for the Vikings. Host Northwest Nazarene was third with 101-1/2 points in the eight-team meet. Western Oregon took its first men's championship since winning the inaugural meet in 2004. The Wolves had 178 points to Western's 113-1/2. Northwest Nazarene was third with 99-1/2. Michelle Howe (Fr., Lakewood) got the Viking women off to a good start by winning the 60-meter hurdles in 9.30. She ran a school-record 9.23 in the prelims. Western finished 1-2 in the triple jump with Megan Paulsen (Fr., Bellevue/Bellevue Christian) taking top honors (37-1/4) and Christy Miller (Jr., Boise, ID/Bishop Kelly) being second (36-4 3/4). Sarah Porter (Fr., Hockinson) was runner-up in the 5,000 (18:04.65) and anchored the Vikings' distance medley relay that finished second (12:47.47). Completing that quartet were Cheryl Watson (Fr., Olympia), Megan Zukowski (Fr., Maple Valley/Tahoma) and Ally Gango (Fr., Spokane/Medical Lake). Placing third for the Vikings were Heidi Dimmitt (Jr., Wenatchee) in the 400 (59.50), Clara Cook (Jr., Wenatchee) in the high jump (5-3 1/4), Zukowski in the 60 (8.10) and Miller in the pole vault (11-6 1/4). Dimmitt ran the lead-off leg onWestern's 4x400 relay that finished third (4:02.78). The other members of that foursome were Amanda Thornton (Jr., Kenmore/Inglemoor), Megan O'Connell (Fr., Sammamish/Skyline) and Sarah Brownell (Fr., Yelm). Joana Houplin (Fr., Olympia) was fourth in both the 60 (8.21) and 200 (26.61) as was Paulsen in the long jump (17-0). Western won five events in the men's competition, led by Ryan Brown (Fr., Bellingham/Squalicum), who cleared a national provisional qualifying height of 15-10 in taking the pole vault. The Vikings have had the winner all five years, the only school to do that in any event. The four other Viking event winners were Keith Lemay (Sr., Lynden/Lynden Christian) in the 800 (1:57.86), Jordan Welling (Fr., Burlington/Burlington-Edison) in the 5,000 (15:15.60), Keefe Brockman (Fr., Richland/Hanford) in the high jump (6-4 3/4), and the distance medley relay (10:38.21) made up of Kyle Lampi (Jr., Everett), Will Cameron (So., Poulsbo/North Kitsap), Nick Abraham (Fr., Issaquah/Skyline) and Bennett Grimes (So., Pocatello, ID/Century). Lampi placed second in the 800 (1:58.17) as was Allan Denton (So., Los Angeles, CA/Upland) in the long jump (22-2 1/4). Grimes finished third in the mile (4:22.47) as did Brockman in the triple jump (45-4 1/4). Jessica Pixler of Seattle Pacific and Zeb Udell of Western Oregon were voted the Most Outstanding Performers. Pixler swept the women's 800 and mile for the second year in row, setting meet records of 2:10.18 and 4:50.38, respectively. She also ran on SPU's winning distance medley relay team. Udell scored a meet-high 24 points as he won the long jump with a conference and meet record leap of 23-0. He also finished second in the pole vault (15-6 1/4) and placed third in the 60 meters (7.21). Seattle Pacific's women won a total of nine events, including both relays in winning its fifth consecutive team title. Among SPU's winners was Mellisa Peaslee who smashed meet and GNAC records and established an automatic national qualifying mark in the pole vault. Peaslee cleared 12-9, five inches better than the previous conference record and nearly a foot (11 inches) better than the previous meet record. In addition to Peaslee and Udell, Matt Rogstad of Central Washington and SPU's women's 4x400 relay team of Latasha Essien, Teona Golding, Peaslee and Jennifer Pike also set meet and conference records. Rogstad, who won the 60 last year, set records in winning the men's 400 in a time of 49.58. Rogstad also finished second in the 200 in a time of 22.56.
