NAMPA, Id. - Sprinter Michael Dean (Fr., Tacoma/Stadium) won two events and set a meet record in a third and Tyler Thornbrue (Sr., Shelton) led a third straight 1-2-3 sweep in the pole vault, but it wasn't enough for a third straight title in the men's division as Western Washington University placed second, just 5-1/2 points behind champion Central Washington, at the fourth annual Great Northwest Athletic Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships on Monday at Jackson's Track in the Idaho Center Sports Complex.

The Vikings finished with 166 points to 171-1/2 for Central, last year's runner-up by 17 points. Western Oregon was a distant third with 80 points in the seven-team field.

"We were 20 points down going in when we had to scratch (sprinter) Eddie Kaeka (Sr., Spanaway/Spanaway Lake) because of a pulled hamstring," said Western coach Pee Wee Halsell. "Nearly coming back from that was a pretty amazing thing."

Western had its best-ever finish in the women's division, placing fourth after being fifth in each of the last three years. The Vikings had 87 points, just six behind third-place Western Oregon. Seattle Pacific easily won its fourth straight title with 192 points, well ahead of host Northwest Nazarene at 104.

"They were just phenomenal," Halsell said. "There was amazing competition on that side. Our goal was to move up and we accomplished that. They competed like champions."

In all, seven school records were broken and another tied.

In the men's division, Dean placed first in both the 200 meters (22.42) and the 400 (49.95). He set a meet record and tied his own school mark of 7.06 in the 60 prelims, but finished eighth (7.69) in the final.

"He'd just finished the 400 and was fourth in the 60 when he cramped up," Halsell said. "At first, I thought he'd pulled a hamstring, but he came back to win the 200."

Thornbrue, who was the pole vault runner-up in each of the last two years, cleared 15-10 to win the event. Bryan Lucke (Jr., Snohomish/Monroe) was second (15-2 1/4) and Hunter Verner (Sr., Brentwood, TN), who won the event in 2005, was third (14-8 1/4) for the Vikings.

In the women's division, Western's Kim Bascom (Sr., Camano Island/Stanwood) won both the long jump and triple jump with school and meet record marks. Her 37-9 1/4 in the triple jump, which also broke the GNAC standard, bettered her NCAA Division II national provisional qualifying mark. Her 18-3 3/4 in the long jump also met the provisional standard, and bettered the WWU record of 17-7 set by Debbie Sandgren in 1993.

"She absolutely had an incredible meet," said Halsell. "She had a lot of spring and was practically bouncing out of the sand pit. She wasn't even supposed the win the long jump."

Anther individual champion for the Viking men was Sam Brancheau (Sr., Edmonds/Edmonds-Woodway), who took the mile in 4:16.90, finishing .01 in front of teammate Anthony Tomsich (So., Fairbanks, AK/West Valley) (4:16.91). Brancheau was runner-up in the 800 meters in 1:55.24, the time just .01 off his school standard set in 2005, and he ran the third leg on the distance medley relay that placed second in a WWU record 10:28.96.

Western's Adam Neff (Sr., White Salmon/Columbia) was second in the 400 (50.06) and fourth in the 200 (22.91). He also ran the first leg on the 4x400 relay that placed second in a school-record 3:22.76, breaking a mark of 3:25.18 that had stood since 2004.

Also placing second for the Vikings were Peter Geist (Sr., Portland, OR/Grant) in the high jump (6-6 3/4), despite a meet record effort, and Dustin Wilson (Sr., Silverdale/Central Kitsap) in the 60 hurdles (8.58).

In the 5,000, Western's Chad Portwood (Sr., Cheney) was third (15:11.97), Tomsich (15:28.48) fourth and Logan Senrud (Sr., Bigfork, MT) (15:28.87) fifth.

Heidi Dimmitt (So., Wenatchee) had a strong showing for the Viking women, winning the 400 (59.11) and placed fourth in both the 60 (8.21) and 200 (26.42). She also ran the first leg of the 4x400 relay that had a school-record clocking of 4:07.06 in finishing fourth.

Clara Cook (So., Wenatchee) placed fifth in the high jump, clearing 5-5 1/2 to improve on her school record and provisional mark. She also ran the second leg on the distance medley relay that placed fourth in the school record time of 13:36.17.

"We came in and competed to the best of our ability," Halsell said. "I can't ask any more than that."

GNAC Track and Field: Pixler, Dean, Essien, Bascom Each Win Two

Freshman Jessica Pixler of Seattle Pacific won the women's mile and 800 meters both in meet record times Monday leading Seattle Pacific to its fourth consecutive women's team title in the fourth annual Great Northwest Athletic Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships on Jackson's Track in the Idaho Sports Center at Nampa, Idaho.

Pixler's meet record winning times were 4:54.53 and 2:11.52. Her 800 time is just .02 seconds off the NCAA automatic qualifying time. Earlier this season, she set an automatic qualifying time in the mile with a GNAC record time of 4:47.80.

The Falcons easily outdistanced second-place Northwest Nazarene 192-104. Western Oregon (93 points) edged Western Washington (87) and Central Washington (82) to finish third.

Central Washington won its first men's team title, edging two-time defending champion Western Washington by 5 1/2 points, 171 1/2 to 166. Western Oregon (80) nipped Northwest Nazarene (77) by three points for third place.

Michael Dean and Kim Bascom of Western Washington and Latasha Essien of Seattle Pacific also won two events each.

Dean swept the men's 200 and 400 meters in times of 22.42 and 49.95. He also finished eighth in the 60 after setting a meet record in the prelims with a time of 7.06. Essien won the women's 60 in a meet record time of 7.73 and the 200 in a time of 25.50.

Essien's meet record in winning the 60 came after teammate Nyema Sims, who finished second, set records in the prelims with a time of 7.80.

Bascom set a meet and GNAC record - one of three new GNAC records established in the meet - in winning the women's triple jump (37-9 1/4) and also won the long jump with a mark of 18-3 3/4. Bascom broke her own triple jump GNAC record by one-quarter of an inch.

Krissy Tandle and Cameron Neel, both of Central Washington, won their third straight shot put titles. Tandle had a winning put of 42-10 1/4 in the women's event, while Neel set a meet record with a throw of 57-3 3/4.

CWU's Robert Edwards won his second consecutive title in the men's 60 meter hurdles in a meet record time of 8.26. Also winning their second titles were Karin Rohde of Seattle Pacific in the women's 5,000 meters and Greg Hamm of Northwest Nazarene in the men's triple jump.

Rohde, the 2005 champion, won the event in a meet record time of 18:17.35. Hamm won his second consecutive title in the triple with a leap of 46-8.

In the men's 5,000, John Riak set a meet record in a time of 15:01.67. Anthony Marin of Western Oregon won the men's weight throw with a meet record mark of 59-8 1/4 and Central Washington's Cameron Bailey set a new standard in winning the high jump with a leap of 6-8 3/4.

Both 4x400 winning relay teams also set meet and conference records. Seattle Pacific's women were clocked in record times of 3:58.68, while Central Washington won the men's race in 3:20.98.
