Schedule/Results | Roster | News | Archives Porter and Gruszecki lead Vikings on first day at GNAC Championships
May 2, 2008 ELLENSBURG, Wash. - Western Washington University's Sarah Porter (Fr., Hockinson) bettered her own school record by nearly 15 seconds in winning the women's 10,000 meters and Monika Gruszecki (So., Lynnwood/Meadowdale) became the first Viking in school history to earn an automatic berth to nationals in first-day action Friday at the seventh annual Great Northwest Athletic Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships at Tomlinson Stadium. Final-day action Saturday begins at 11 a.m. Porter's winning clocking was 36:31.85 as she improved her NCAA Division II national provisional qualifying time. Gruszecki, the defending national champion, met the automatic qualifying standard in the women's javelin as she placed third with a mark of 146-2, just eight inches off her personal best. "That time by Porter could get her to nationals," said Western coach Pee Wee Halsell. "She went out and ran her race and it was a great one." "Monika actually had one of her worst starts, but really put one out there on her fifth throw." It was the sixth straight competition that Gruszecki has thrown over 140 feet. In the team standings, the Viking women are third (49 points) after seven events and the men (28) fourth following six events. Seattle Pacific leads the women's division with 71 points and Western Oregon is second (63). In the men's division, host Central Washington holds a four-point advantage over Western Oregon, 57 to 53, with Northwest Nazarene third (30). "We had a number of personal and season bests," Halsell said. "We qualified a number of people and scored some points. We should do well tomorrow." The Vikings' Christy Miller (Jr., Boise, ID/Bishop Kelly) finished second in the women's pole vault, clearing 10-11, and placed fifth in the long jump (16-10 1/2). Blake Medhaug (So., Bothell) was fourth in the men's 10,000 (32:29.70) as was Shane Gruger (Fr., Shoreline/Shorewood) in the men's long jump (21-6 3/4). Western had four preliminary heat winners. They were Megan O'Connell ((Fr., Sammamish/Skyline) in the women's 400 (58.54), Michelle Howe (Fr., Lakewood) in the 100 hurdles (15.18), Heidi Dimmitt (Jr., Wenatchee) in the women's 400 hurdles (1:03.37) where she is the defending champion, and Kevin Myhre (Jr., Edmonds/Meadowdale) in the men's 400 hurdles (54.18). The Vikings' Megan Zukowski (Fr., Maple Valley/Tahoma) was second in both the women's 100 (12.70) and 200 (25.97) heats as were Sarah Brownell (Fr., Yelm) in the women's 400 (58.66), Myhre in the men's 110 hurdles (15.46), Matt O'Connell (So., Sammamish/Skyline) in the men's 400 (49.59) and Kyle Lampi (Jr., Everett) in the men's 800 (1:57.05. Western had four third-place heat efforts. They were Joana Houplin (Fr., Olympia) in the women's 200 (26.50), Cheryl Watson (Fr., Olympia) in the women's 800 (2:18.35), Nick Abraham (Fr., Issaquah/Skyline) in the men's 800 (1:57.40) and Will Cameron (So., Poulsbo/North Kitsap) in the men's 800 (1:54.97).
