SEATTLE, Wash. --- Western Washington University sophomore Anthony Tomsich (Fairbanks, AK/West Valley) placed first in a time of 26:52, leading the Viking men, who captured four of the top five finishes, to the team title at the Emerald City Classic.

The Western women placed three runners in the top ten to place second. They were led by freshman Ashley McDougall (Redmond, WA), who finished sixth with a time of 23:47.

"Both teams ran very solid races today," said Western head coach Pee Wee Halsell. "We have some things we need to work on, but overall I'm very pleased with today's effort."

The Western men, who entered the meet ranked No. 21 in the National Cross Country Coaches Association Top 25, scored 17 points to defeat Seattle Pacific (47) and host Seattle U. (72). Three Vikings joined Tomsich in posting top-10 finishes in the eight-kilometer race. Sam Bedell (So., Reno, NV/Bishop Manogue) was second in 27:09, Bul Nyuop (Jr., Lacey, WA/North Thurston) fourth in 27:23, and Josh Beck (Jr., Kelso, WA) fifth in 27:28.

Seattle Pacific captured the six-kilometer women's race with a total of 28 points, followed by Western (40) and Seattle U. (61). The winning Falcons' Jessica Pixler was the individual champion in 22:31.

The Vikings' Danielle Slaughter (Fr., Spokane, WA/Shadle Park) was clocked in 24:21 and McKinley Williams (Fr., Federal Way, WA/Todd Beamer) was timed in 24:30, finishing eighth and ninth, respectively.

"It's nice to see so many top finishes, despite sitting out two or three of or top runners for each race" Halsell said. "We should have great depth in our lineups this year and that is very encouraging."

Western next competes in the Sundodger Invitational on Sat., Sept. 16 at 9 a.m. at Seattle's Lincoln Park.
