Sept. 10, 2005
SEATTLE, Wash. - Western Washington University placed first in the men's division and two-time NCAA Division II All-America Laura Trevellyan (Sr., Vashon Island) finished second individually as the Vikings were fourth in the women's run at the Emerald City Cross Country Invitational Meet on Saturday at Lower Woodland Park. Leading the victorious Viking men were three underclassmen. Freshman Sam Bedell (Reno, NV/Bishop Manogue) placed third, covering the 8-kilometer course in 27:27.45; and two sophomores, Sam Brancheau (So., Edmonds/Edmonds-Woodway) and Michael Stewart (Jr., Edmonds/Edmonds-Woodway), finished fourth (27:20.45) and fifth (27:21.83), respectively. Placing ninth (27:37.52) for Western, which also took top honors at the Emerald City meet in 2003, was junior Chad Portwood (Cheney), a transfer from Western State CO. The Vikings finished with 35 points. Seattle Pacific was second in the six-team field with 48 points and host Seattle U. third with 81. The Redhawks' Casey Moriarty was the individual champion (25:38.82), followed by Northwest's Leonard Randall (26:51.29). "The guys ran great," said Western coach Pee Wee Halsell. "They did a good job of running together as a pack and placing high. But there's still room for improvement." Trevellyan toured the 5-kilometer course in 18:57.72, trailing just Merediyh Crane from Seattle Pacific, who had a time of 18:16.28. She helped the Falcons take the team title with 43 points, followed by Central Washington 68, Seattle U. 82 and Western 92. Placing 10th for the Vikings was freshman Jolene Boogaard (Kelso) in 19:32.00. "Laura ran well," Halsell said. "We have a ways to go with the women, but I think we'll be okay. Boogaard competed well." Western entered the race with the men ranked fifth and the women eighth in the NCAA II West Region Preseason ratings. "We just wanted to see where we are," said Halsell. "It's always a tough meet for us coming off of camp." Western next competes in the Sundodger Classic on Sat., Sept. 17 (9 a.m.) at Seattle's Lincoln Park.
