SEATTLE, Wash. - The nationally ranked Western Washington University men's team was the top NCAA Division II squad in the open race and the Vikings' Laura Trevellyan (Sr., Vashon Island) placed eighth in the women's run at the 14th annual University of Washington Sundodger Cross Country Invitational on Saturday at Lincoln Park.

The Viking men, ranked No.24 nationally in the latest American Cross Country Coaches Association/NCAA Division II Poll, finished fifth (203) in a 29-team field behind Willamette (45), Portland (72), British Columbia (177) and Simon Fraser (183).

Western was led by Sam Brancheau (Jr., Edmonds/Edmonds-Woodway), who was 39th with a 25:53 clocking over the 8-kilometer course. Sam Bedell (Reno, NV/Bishop Manogue) was 49th in 26:04 and Michael Stewart (So., Edmonds/Edmonds-Woodway) was 51st in 26:05 for the Vikings.

"The men had a pretty good race," said Western coach Pee Wee Halsell. "We had a 22-second split between one and five, and 37 seconds for one to seven. That's a pretty close pack, we just need to move that up a bit."

"It was a huge field and good quality. That's one reason we like running in this race, and we stacked up pretty good."

Trevellyan, a two-time All-American, finished eighth, completing the 6-kilometer course in 22:18, as the Western women placed 12th among 23 teams with 323 points. Simon Fraser was the team champion with 38 points, followed by British Columbia with 89.

Jolene Boogaard (Fr., Kelso) placed 52nd for the Vikings in 23:37 and Lexi Baxter (Sr., Colville) was 74th in 24:01. "Laura had a good race," Halsell said. "We had a few other women who had good races and are moving up, but we still have a ways to go there."

A total of 311 runners competed in the men's open race and 265 in the women's open run.

Host Washington won both invitational races, edging UCLA, 53 to 64, in the 13-team men's race; and topping Portland, 39 to 66, in the 14-team women's run. UCLA's Austin Ramos was the individual men's champion (24:00) with just 10 seconds separating the top six runners and Washington State's Haley Paul paced the women (20:50).

Western next competes at the Saint Martin's University Open on Sat., Sept. 24 (9 a.m.) at Lacey (SMU campus).
