Sept. 23, 2006 LACEY, Wash. - Western Washington University's Josh Beck (Jr., Kelso) and Cale McCulloch (R-Fr., Snohomish) finished among the top 10 in helping the Viking men place third in the Saint Martin's University Cross Country Invitational on Saturday. Western Washington was fifth in the women's run, led for the third straight week by Ashley McDougall (Fr., Redmond). "We were basically running our "B" squads as we prepare for the next three weeks of competition," said Western head coach Pee Wee Halsell. Saint Martin's will host the Great Northwest Athletic Conference Championships on Oct. 21. "We wanted people to run the course to school the runners we will have at conference." Alaska Anchorage, ranked No.25 in the latest United States Cross Country Coaches Association Top 25, took the men's division with 34 points, 21 better than runner-up Western Oregon (55). Western Washington, rated No.17, had 91 points in the seven-team field. The victorious Seawolves had six runners place among the top 15. Taking individual honors was Saint Martin's John Riak, who completed the 8-kilometer course in 25:09. Beck placed sixth for Western Washington in 26:18, and McCulloch was seventh in 26:26. Seattle Pacific, ranked No.10 nationally, dominated the women's division with 26 points. The Falcons had five runners in the top nine with Mary Moriarty (22:12) leading a 2-3-4 grouping. Club Northwest was second with 65 and No.13 Alaska Anchorage third with 80. Western Washington had 110 points. McDougall toured the 5-kilometer distance in 23:26. Club Northwest's Linda Huyck posted a winning time of 21:34. Western Washington next travels to Salem, Ore., to compete in the Willamette University Invitational on Sat., Sept. 30 (10:30 a.m.).
