Schedule/Results | Roster | News | Archives Western women third, men fifth at St. Martin's Invitational
Sept. 24, 2005
LACEY, Wash. - With just five runners competing, the nationally ranked Western Washington University men's team placed fifth in the men's race and the Vikings finished third in the women's run at the Saint Martin's University Cross Country Invitational meet on Saturday at the SMU campus. The Viking men, ranked No.22 nationally in the latest American Cross Country Coaches Association/NCAA Division II Poll and fourth in the West Region, finished with 121 points in the seven-team field. Victoria easily took the team title with 20 points as its five top runners placing second through sixth individually. Seattle Pacific was second (63), Western Oregon third (88) and host Saint Martin's fifth (104). Western was led by Bul Nyuop (So., Lacey/North Thurston), who completed the 8-kilometer course in 26:50. Saint Martin's John Riak took the individual crown with a 25:49 clocking, followed by the five Victoria runners who were separated by just 33 seconds. Leading that contingent was Kris Swanson in 26:05. "It was definitely a rest week for most everybody on the men's side," said Western coach Pee Wee Halsell. The Viking women, ranked 10th in the region, had 101 points, as they placed well behind Victoria (26) and Seattle Pacific (38). Seattle Pacific's Meredith Crane took the individual crown with a time of 17:33 over the 5-kilometer distance. For the third straight week, Western was led by All-American Laura Trevellyan (Sr., Vashon Island), who placed 21st in 19:31. The Vikings' Jill Keller (Fr., Spokane/Mount Spokane) finished 22nd, also in 19:31; and Lexi Baxter (Sr., Colville) was 29th in 19:59. "We tried some different things with the women and they did better," Halsell said. "We had Laura run back and encourage and that helped a lot. We had some pretty good breakthroughs all the way through." Western has a week off before playing host to its own Viking Invitational on Oct. 8 at Lake Padden Park in Bellingham.
