Sept. 30, 2006
SALEM, Ore. - Logan Senrud (Sr., Bigfork, MT) placed 21st individually, helping Western Washington University place fourth among 31 men's teams in the Cardinal Division at the 32nd annual Willamette University Charles Bowles Cross Country Invitational on Saturday at Bush Park. The Vikings finished with 184 points, three ahead of fifth-place Azusa Pacific CA. Concordia CA easily won the team title with 37 points, placing four runners in the top seven. Westmont CA was a distant second at 149 and Alaska Anchorage third at 152. Western entered the meet ranked No.17 in the latest United States Cross Country Coaches Association Top 25 and Alaska Anchorage was No.25. "Our men didn't get out quick enough and got jammed in," said Western coach Pee Wee Halsell. "They had a strong finish in a big field, but that cost us a couple of places." "I was not pleased with the result as a whole, but I'm still encouraged. We can do better." Senrud had a 25:19 time over the 8-kilometer course. Keever Henry (Jr., Kelso) placed 31st for the Vikings in 25:24, Bul Nyuop (Jr., Lacey/North Thurston) 36th in 25:28 and Anthony Tomsich (So., Fairbanks, AK/West Valley) 41st in 25:31. Azusa Pacific's Aron Rono took individual honors with a 23:43 clocking. In the Cardinal women's division, Western totaled 372 points to tie for 12th with Vanguard CA. Concordia CA placed first with 52 points, 77 more than runner-up Willamette. The Vikings were led for the fourth straight week by Ashley McDougall (Fr., Redmond), who toured the 5-kilometer distance in 18:44. The individual champion was Willamette's Sarah Zerzan with a time of 17:11. "The women ran pretty well," Halsell said. "I was excited to see our two through five runners closing in on each other. We need to keep moving them up closer to Ashley, who had a great race." In the Gold Division, UC Davis took the men's title and Oregon State captured the women's crown. Western plays host to its own Viking Invitational on Sat., Oct. 7 (10:30 a.m.).
