Schedule/Results | Roster | News | Archives Western men win 32nd annual Viking Invitational
Oct. 8, 2005
BELLINGHAM, Wash. - For the fourth time in six years, Western Washington University captured the men's team title at the 32nd annual Viking Invitational meet Saturday at Lake Padden Park. The Vikings, ranked No.21 in the latest American Cross Country Coaches Association/NCAA II men's poll, finished with 28 points, 18 ahead of defending champion Seattle Pacific. Seattle Pacific won the women's race with 20 points, Western placing third with 69 points, just seven behind runner-up Seattle University. Seven Western men were among the top-25 finishers, led by Logan Senrud (Jr. Bigfork, MT) and Sam Brancheau (Jr., Edmonds/Edmonds-Woodway) who placed eighth and ninth, respectively. Senrud covered the 10-kilometer course in 33:25 and Brancheau finished five seconds behind him. Seattle University's Casey Moriarty placed first with a time of 31:56. "The men ran great," Western coach Pee Wee Halsell said. "We showed our depth which will help us later down the line in two weeks at the conference championships and in four weeks at regionals. Having Logan (arch) and Keever (Henry, Achilles tendon) coming off injuries really helped us a whole lot. We still have a ways to go, but I'm very excited about this team." Western All-American Laura Trevellyan (Sr., Vashon) finished fourth in the 6-kilometer women's race with a time of 22:32. She was the second-best collegiate runner behind winner Meredith Crane, who was one of three Seattle Pacific runners placing in the top 10. "Laura had a tremendous race," Halsell said. "She's getting a little closer to catching Meredith Crane, so we're pretty excited about that." Trevellyan, who finished third in last year's invitational, has been Western's top runner in all four races this season. In the men's race, Western's Bul Nyuop (So., Lacey/North Thurston) placed 16th (33:52), Chad Portwood (Jr., Cheney/Western State) 18th (34:05), Henry (So, Kelso) 19th (34:11), Keith Lemay (So., Lynden/Lynden Christian) 21st (34:12) and Michael Stewart (So., Edmonds/Edmonds-Woodway) 23rd (34:18). In the women's run, the Vikings' Jolene Boogaard (Fr., Kelso) was 21st (23:45), Erin Deasy (Jr., Gig Harbor/Tulsa) 34th (24:52) and Rachael Bates (Jr., Coeur d'Alene, ID/Lake City) 38th (25:03). The Viking men captured their ninth WWU Invitational team title after finishing second at last year's invitational. The women, who took Western's only title in 2002, had placed fourth the previous two years. The Vikings next host the Great Northwest Athletic Conference Championships on Oct. 22 at Lake Padden Park.
