BELLINGHAM, Wash. - Sophomore Sam Brancheau (So., Edmonds/Edmonds-Woodway) finished fifth among collegiate runners, leading the Western Washington University men's cross country team to second place among five teams at the 31st annual WWU Invitational on Saturday at Lake Padden Park.

The Vikings had 67 points, finishing behind Seattle Pacific (46 points), which had five runners among the top 15 college competitors. Humboldt State was third (72), followed by Northwest Nazarene (84) and Central Washington (85).

Western All-American Laura Trevellyan (Jr., Vashon) placed second among collegiate runners to help the Vikings to fourth place (98 points) among seven teams in the women's division. Central Washington took team honors with 64 points, with three runners among the top 15 overall. Seattle Pacific was second (71) and Seattle U. third (78), followed by Western, Alaska Anchorage (99), Humboldt State (131) and Northwest Nazarene (150).

"Both our men's and women's teams ran well," said Western head coach Pee Wee Halsell. "Our men really came together as a team. The women have overcome some injuries and are just about where they should be. Hopefully, we can move up from here."

Humboldt State finished one-two in the men's individual standings. Brian Kostock was first, covering the 10-kilometer course in 32:49. Teammate Jasper Peach was second (33:01), with former Western All-American Kurt Hartmaier, running for Club Northwest, placing third (33:11), unattached Angelo Baca fourth (33:16) and Seattle Pacific's Tim LeCount fifth (33:34).

"I feel I did very well today," said Brancheau, who finished with a time of 34:00. "We beat two teams ranked ahead of us (regionally), so I'm very happy with our performance as a team."

Trevellyan ran a solid 23:01 over the 6-kilometer course, but it wasn't enough to top the overall women's winner Karen Dickson (21:57) of Seattle Pacific. Erica Daligcon of theSeattle Running Club finished third (22:52), Seattle's Kelly Fullerton fourth (23:15) and unattached Rachel Brewer fifth (23:30).

"This race gave both our teams a good look at this course where the regional meet will be held in a few weeks and I think that's key," Halsell said. The West Regional takes place Nov. 6.

Western's Logan Senrud (So., Bigfork, MT) placed 13th (34:38) among the men's collegiate runners, Mike Stewart (Fr., Edmonds, WA/Edmonds-Woodway) 15th (34:45), Keever Henry (R-Fr., Kelso) 16th (34:50) and Keith Lemay (Lynden, WA/Lynden Christian) 18th (35:14). Jake Haskins (Jr., Port Townsend) (35:22) and Alex Litzinger (Fr., Mukilteo, WA/Kamiak) (35:41) completed the scoring for the Vikings, finishing 20th and 25th, respectively.

Western's Sara Thon (Fr., Bellingham/Squalicum) was tenth (24:14) in the women's division, Katrina Schwerdtfeger (Jr., Mountlake Terrace) 26th (25:06), Rachel Bates (So., Coeur d'Alene, ID/Lake City) 27th (25:07).
