CHINO, Calif. - The Western Washington University men's cross country team and women's runner Laura Trevellyan (Sr., Vashon/Vashon Island) narrowly missed qualifying for nationals Saturday at the NCAA West Regional at Prado Park.

The Viking men finished fourth among 16 teams in the 10-kilometer race, 18 points behind third-place Alaska Anchorage. The top three teams qualified for nationals.

Trevellyan, seeking a top-five finish that would have given her an individual berth to nationals, veered slightly off course near the end of the race, dropping her from third place to ninth, where she finished the 6-kilometer race with a time of 22:34.50. Trevellyan received all-region honors for her top-15 finish.

In the men's race, Western made up significant ground on Alaska Anchorage, which defeated the Vikings by 49 points at the Great Northwest Athletic Conference Championships on Oct. 22 at Bellingham.

"The men ran a really good race," said Western head coach Pee Wee Halsell. "We were 18 points behind Alaska Anchorage for that qualifying spot. We moved up a heck of a lot from conference, it just wasn't quite enough. I'm proud of them."

Chico State dominated in winning its fourth consecutive regional title with 23 points, 74 ahead of second-place Cal Poly Pomona. The Wildcats placed five runners in the top ten, led by individual champion Patrick Boivin (31:23.60) and runner-up Charlie Serrano (31:44.30).

The Vikings were led by Logan Senrud (Jr., Bigfork, MT) and Sam Brancheau (Jr., Edmonds/Edmonds-Woodway), who finished 17th (33:30.50) and 22nd (33:49.60), respectively.

A pack of four Western runners finished between 29th and 35th. Keith Lemay (So., Lynden/Lynden Christian) was 29th (34:18.60), Anthony Tomsich (Fr., Fairbanks,AK/West Valley) 31st (34:24.60), Michael Stewart (So., Edmonds/Edmonds-Woodway) 33rd (34:25.80) and Chad Portwood (Jr., Cheney/Western State CO) 35th (34:29.10). Sam Bedell (Fr, Reno, NV/Bishop Manogue) finished 69th (36:13.30) for the Vikings.

In the women's race, Western placed ninth among 21 teams. Chico State won its third straight women's title with 42 points, 20 ahead of second-place UC San Diego. Alaska Anchorage was third with 129 points. UC San Diego's Miriam Hodgins took individual honors with a time of 21:59.80.

Late in the race, Trevellyan appeared poised to claim her third straight trip to nationals when disaster struck. Shortly after moving into third place near the 5-kilometer mark, she arrived at a turn in the course that was marked differently for the men's and women's races. She mistakenly followed the men's course for approximately ten strides, and was unable to maintain her grip on a top-five spot.

"Those runners are moving pretty fast so you can't make any mistakes," Halsell said. "That cost her. It broke her cadence and she couldn't recover from it ... Had that not happened, there was no doubt in my mind that she would have been in the top five."

Trevellyan is a two-time All-American who finished 22nd at nationals last year after finishing 21st in 2003. Halsell said the race was a disappointing conclusion to her outstanding career.

"I can't say in words how proud of her I am and the disappointment I feel can't be put into words," Halsell said. "To be a senior and end your cross country career like that is hard to take."

Also competing for the Vikings were Erin Deasy (Jr., Gig Harbor/Tulsa OK) who finished 32nd (23:52.60), Jolene Boogaard (Fr., Kelso) 51st (24:18.90), Jill Keller (Fr., Spokane/Mount Spokane) 90th (25:38.50), Keely Kaligis (So., Mukilteo/Kamiak) 103rd (25:50.70), Lexi Baxter (Sr., Colville) 124th (26:43.90) and Katrina Schwerdtfeger (Sr., Mountlake Terrace/Everett CC) 135th (27:20.60).
