Six Viking harriers are GNAC Academic All-Stars

BELLINGHAM, Wash. - Western Washington University senior Laura Trevellyan (Vashon/Vashon Island) was one of six Viking runners named to the Great Northwest Athletic Conference Cross Country Academic All-Star Team announced today.

Trevellyan, a two-time All-American, was honored for the third straight year. She is maintaining a 3.51 grade point average (4.0 scale) as an interdisciplinary concepts major at Western's Fairhaven College. Trevellyan placed fourth at the GNAC Championships last Saturday to earn all-league honors for the third consecutive season.

Also named to the squad were Erin Deasy (Jr., Gig Harbor/Tulsa), Keith Lemay (So., Lynden/Lynden Christian), Keever Henry (So., Kelso). Katrina Schwerdtfeger (Sr., Mountlake Terrace/Everett CC) and Katie Wittrock (So, Tacoma/Bellarmine Prep).

Schwerdtfeger is a physical education major with a 3.61 GPA. Wittrock has a 3.51 GPA in psychology and Deasy has a 3.39 GPA in health education.

Lemay is maintaining a 3.66 GPA in physical education, and Henry is an accounting major with a 3.24 GPA.

The Vikings next compete Nov. 5 at the NCAA II West Regional in Chino, Calif.

To be eligible for the academic team, student-athletes must have a minimum GPA of 3.20 and be in at least their second year of competition at their university.

Fifty-Nine Named To GNAC Cross Country Academic Team

SPOKANE - A total of 59 student-athletes - 22 men and 37 women - have been named to the 2005 Great Northwest Athletic Conference Academic cross country all-conference team.

Heading up the women's academic squad are Marcie Mullen of Central Washington and Katelynn Blume of Saint Martin's, both with perfect 4.00 GPAs. Mullen is undecided on her major, while Blume is majoring in chemistry. Among the men the top academic all-star is Tim Keller of Northwest Nazarene. Keller, a math major, has a 3.99 GPA.

Seattle Pacific placed the most athletes on the academic team, each earning nine spots. Saint Martin's earned eight spots and Northwest Nazarene seven, while Central Washington, Seattle University, Western Oregon and Western Washington each have six academic all-stars.

A total of 29 athletes - 15 men and 14 women - were repeaters from last year. Eight athletes were selected to the team for the third time, including Erik Wickstrom, Jonas Tetlie and Johanna Turunen of Alaska Fairbanks, Christy Wynkoop of Northwest Nazarene, Nicole Beatty of Saint Martin's, Meghan Salveson of Seattle University, Becky Knox of Seattle Pacific and Laura Trevellyan of Western Washington.
