TACOMA, Wash. - The Western Washington University women's varsity eight, ranked No.1 in the Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association/USRowing NCAA Division II Preseason Poll, opened the 2004 season on a rough note as it placed fourth at the Daffodil Cup Regatta held Saturday on American Lake.

"We had a great start, but it was really rough water and we caught a few crabs and never really got it together," said Western program coordinator and head women's coach John Fuchs.

"We had trained hard all week, so everyone was a little tired. I'm really not too unhappy with it. It was a good learning experience for us."

Host Puget Sound, which placed second nationally in NCAA Division III last year and was ranked No.7 in this season's preseason poll, won the 2,000-meter race with a time of 8:19.0. Lewis & Clark OR was second in 8:19.6, Pacific Lutheran third in 8:23.5 and Western fourth in 8:32.6.

The Vikings were led by the winning performances of the women's junior varsity four and men's varsity four.

The women's JV boat led from start to finish and was timed in 9:50.0 in the four-boat race, 18 seconds ahead of runner-up Seattle Pacific.

Seated in that shell were coxswain Krissy Whaley (Jr., Woodinville), stroke Lindsay Mann-King (Fr., Colville/Seattle U.), No.3 Stephanie Parker (Fr., Marysville/Marysville-Pilchuck/Seattle Pacific), No.2 Liz Fayram (Fr., Bellingham), and bow Quinn Sanford (Sr., Olympia/Capital/Cottey JC).

"They had a great race," Fuchs said. "Mann-King and Parker are the two novices in the varsity eight, so it was a good thing for them to experience that."

The men's varsity shell also won by 18 seconds in a seven-boat race, crossing the finish line in 8:00.0 with Puget Sound second.

Making up that boat were coxswain Kelly McComb (Sr., Bainbridge Island), stroke Joshua Griesse (Jr., Pleasant Hill, OR), No.3 Case Sweerus (So., Gig Harbor), No.2 Jonathan Fox (Jr., Shoreline/Shorewood), and bow Phil DuBois (Jr., Olympia/Capital).

"They did pretty well I think," said Western men's coach Marty Sauvage. "This was their first race and they were excited to find out how much speed they had against these other crews. So, that was good for them."

Placing third for Western were the women's novice eight, men's novice four and men's junior varsity eight. Finishing fourth for the Vikings, besides the women's varsity eight, were the women's novice four and women's junior varsity eight, and the men's junior varsity four was eighth.

With the exception of the men's varsity eight, which will compete at the Husky Invitational next Saturday, the rest of the Western crew goes to the Northwest Collegiate Rowing Conference Invitational Regatta at Vancouver, Wash. (Vancouver Lake).
