News | Archives Western's men's varsity four gets lone win in dual meet at Division I Gonzaga
April 10, 2004
MEDICAL LAKE, Wash. - A narrow victory by the men's varsity four and solid performances by both the men's and women's varsity eights provided the highlights for Western Washington University in a 10-race dual meet with NCAA Division I Gonzaga University on Saturday at Silver Lake. "Gonzaga has one of the top three Division I programs on the West Coast, and they're always going to be tough to beat," said Western program coordinator and head women's coach John Fuchs. "Everybody had a good performance for us, whether they won or lost. They're training hard and it's showing. We're going home happy." Western's women's varsity eight, ranked No.1 in this week's Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association/USRowing NCAA II Poll, lost by just over three seconds, completing the 2,000-meter course in 7:03.10. Gonzaga's winning time was 6:58.90. "They (Western) had a great race and were leading after the first 1,000 meters," Fuchs said. "We need to work on our second 1,000 meters, but they rowed really well and they're working well together." Western's shell was made up of coxswain Emily Davis (Sr., Carnation/Mount Si), stroke Julia Gamache (So., Seattle/Blanchet), No.7 Brittany Kruger (Sr., Longview/Mark Morris), No.6 Kailyn McGrath (Jr., Fillmore, CA/Villanova Prep), No.5 Gail Lumsden (Jr., Everett/Mariner), No.4 Lindsay Mann-King (Fr., Colville/Seattle U.), No.3 Stephanie Parker (Fr., Marysville/Marysville-Pilchuck/Seattle Pacific), No.2 Liz Fayram (Fr., Bellingham), and bow Laurel Kaminski (Sr., Bellevue/Newport). The Viking men's four won by .77 seconds with a 7:06.21 clocking to Gonzaga's 7:06.98. Seated in that boat were coxswain Kelly McComb (Sr., Bainbridge Island), stroke Joshua Griesse (Jr., Pleasant Hill, OR), No.3 Case Sweerus (So., Gig Harbor), No.2 Jonathan Fox (Jr., Shoreline/Shorewood), and bow Phil DuBois (Jr., Olympia/Capital). "They were neck and neck pretty much the whole way down," said Fuchs. "Gonzaga got up with 500 meters to go, but in the last 30 strokes, Western pulled out in front. That was a real gut buster. They were just throwing down back and forth all the way." Gonzaga won the men's varsity eight race by seven-plus seconds with a time of 6:21.29 to Western's 6:28.62. "Considering the fact that they hadn't been rowing together much and there were three novices in there, to get that close to a Gonzaga boat with that limited amount of preparation is a pretty good deal," Fuchs said. In the Vikings' eight were coxswain Austin Jenkins (Jr., Vancouver/Hudson's Bay), stroke Joshua Griesse (Jr., Pleasant Hill, OR), No.7 Case Sweerus (So., Gig Harbor), No.6 Jonathan Fox (Jr., Shoreline/Shorewood), No.5 Aaron Novy (Fr., Richland), No.4 Andy Foltz (So., Sumner), No.3 Phil DuBois (Jr., Olympia/Capital), No.2 Will Bufford (Jr., Port Angeles/Peninsula CC), and bow Gavin Owens (Fr. Vancouver/Columbia River). Gonzaga also won the women's junior varsity eight, novice eight, junior varsity four, novice four and varsity four races as well as the men's novice four and junior varsity four runs. Western has a week off before competing in the Northwest Collegiate Rowing Conference Championships on Apr. 24 at Lake Stevens. DUAL MEET - WESTERN WASHINGTON VS. GONZAGA Medical Lake, Wash.
