Schedule/Results | Roster | News | Archives Western eighth after first round at West Regional
May 7, 2007 LAKEWOOD, Colo. - The Western Washington University men's golf team did not have a player in red numbers as it shot a 19-over 303 and trails in the eight-team field after Monday's first round at the NCAA Division II West Regional being held at the Fox Hollow Golf Course. The 54-hole event runs through Wednesday. The Vikings, who were the fifth seed, were led by Julian Peters (R-Fr., Mukilteo/Kamiak), who shot a 1-over 72 and is tied for 15th. Sean Packer (Jr., Sumner/Auburn-Riverside) is tied for 21st after shooting a 3-over 74. Peters was 4-under after the first nine and Packer 1-under. Completing Western's scoring were Tommy Bullock (So., Mukilteo/Kamiak) 77, tied for 34th; Bart Patitucci (Fr., Othello) 80, tied for 42nd and Sam Pauley (Sr., Everett/Kamiak/Everett CC) 83, 44th. "There's still two-thirds of the golf tourney remaining and tomorrow is critical for us as we definitely need to pick up some ground," said Western coach Steve Card. "The way I look at it is that we're 16 shots out of qualifying for a berth to nationals. We just have to make up some ground and get within 10. If we can do that, you just never know." Sixth seed Chico State is the first-round leader at 4-under 280, two shots ahead of second-seed Grand Canyon (282). Fourth-seed Cal State San Bernardino is third at 286, with top seed Cal State Stanislaus fourth at 287. UC San Diego and Sonoma State are tied for fifth at 288 and Hawaii Hilo is seventh at 300. Leading the medalist standings is Chico State's Art Golden III, who fired a 4-under 67. Tied for second, one stroke behind, are Ralph Baxley from Cal State San Bernardino and Jarin Todd from Sonoma State. |
