GOODYEAR, Ariz. - Western Washington University's Jake Koppenberg (Jr., Everett) is in a five-way tie for third in medalist play and the Vikings are fifth among 18 teams after first-day action Monday at the Grand Canyon University Men's Golf Fall Classic being played at the Estrella Mountain Ranch Golf Course.

The third and final round takes place Tuesday.

Western had rounds of 287 and 282 for a 36-hole score of 7-under 567. Abilene Christian TX shot a second-round 275, the low round of the day, and leads the tourney by six strokes at 556. Point Loma Nazarene CA is third at 562 (277-285), one shot better than Cal State Stanislaus at 563 (285-278) with host Grand Canyon fourth at 567 (287-280).

"I felt like we played pretty well today," said Western coach Steve Card. "We had some opportunities to score a little better, but we had a some difficulty reading the Bermuda greens."

"But our ball striking was good and I feel we have the potential of shooting a low round tomorrow. It's out there, we just need to get out there and find it."

Right behind the Vikings in sixth place is Northeastern State OK at 570 (290-280), and UC-Colorado Springs is seventh at 572 (282-290).

Koppenberg is 6-under at 138 with rounds of 70 and 68. Teammate Sean Packer (Sr., Sumner/Auburn Riverside) is tied for 21st at 143 (71-72).

Completing Western's scoring were Thomas Jun (Fr., Federal Way/Todd Beamer) at 145 (73-72), Brandon Brown (Jr., Kent/Jefferson) at 146 (76-70) and Julian Peters (So., Mukilteo/Kamiak) at 147 (73-74).
