Koppenberg places fifth in medalist play at Grand Canyon Fall Invitational

GOODYEAR, Arizona - Western Washington University's Jake Koppenberg (Sr., Everett) finished fifth in medalist play and the Vikings tied for 10th among 18 teams at the Grand Canyon University Fall Invitational Men's Golf Tournament, which ended Tuesday at the 7,121-yard The Golf Club of Estrella.

Western shot a final-round 306 for a 54-hole total of 37-over par 901.

That was 58 strokes behind team champion Cal State San Bernardino, which finished at 21-under 843, 22 strokes ahead of second-place Point Loma Nazarene. The victorious Coyotes shot 283 Tuesday after posting two rounds of 280 Monday.

Point Loma Nazarene's Sam Cyr, who fired a 12-under 60 in the first round, shot a final-round 71 to take medalist honors at 15-under 201. Six shots behind was CSUSB's Gene Webster at 207 (69). Webster's teammate Joe Alldis was third at 208 (71) and Abilene Christian's Cyril Bouniol was fourth at 209 (74).

Koppenberg shot 2-under 70 to place fifth at 5-under 211.

While Koppenberg played solidly, his teammates struggled.

Thomas Jun (So., Federal Way/Todd Beamer) (81) and Brandon Brown (Sr., Kent/Thomas Jefferson) (78) tied for 69th at 233. Julian Peters (Jr., Mukilteo/Kamiak) tied for 71st at 234 (77) and Sandy Vaughan (Fr., Seattle/O'Dea) tied for 74th at 236 (88).

The Vikings have a three-week break before competing in the University of Hawaii Hilo Invitational on Oct. 27-28.
