BELLINGHAM, Wash. - CAL STATE DOMINGUEZ HILLS 2, WESTERN WASHINGTON 1 Vikings unable to hold onto early lead against No.11-ranked Toros

Western Washington University scored first, but still ended up falling 2-1 to nationally ranked Cal State Dominguez Hills in a non-conference men's soccer contest Monday night at Orca Field on the Whatcom CC campus.

Forward Samir Vejo (Sr., Trebnije, Bosnia) scored for the Vikings, who fell to 1-1-0 on the season. CSUDH, ranked No.11 in the preseason NCAA Division II national poll, improved to 2-0-0.

"It's a disappointing loss, we didn't play well from start to finish," said Western coach Travis Connell. "It was a huge game and a big missed opportunity for us."

Vejo opened the scoring in the 32nd minute with his first goal of the season, tapping in from the goalmouth after Tyler Bjork (Fr., Kirkland/Juanita) played a low cross from the left end line.

But the Toros equalized just three minutes later, as forward Mario Guerrero headed in a cross from Kyle Holland.

CSUDH got the game-winner 9:34 into the second half. Jordan Rover chased down a ball near the right corner flag and sent a long ball to Carmelo Terranova, who took a touch just inside the left edge of the penalty area then blasted a shot in from 12 yards out.

CSUDH had an 18-7 edge in shot attempts in a physical match that had nine yellow cards assessed, eight of them to the Toros.

Western had a three-game winning streak snapped with the loss, a run that began with the final two games of the 2007 season.

The Vikings next go on the road, traveling to Sonoma State for a non-league contest Sunday, Sept. 7 (3 p.m.).
