SEATTLE, Wash. - Western Washington University's Ashlee Vincent (So., Bellingham/Squalicum) placed fourth to help the Vikings finish fourth in the women's division at the Emerald City Invitational Cross Country meet held Saturday at Lower Woodland Park. It was the season opener for Western, which was fifth in the men's division - led by Emil Newhouse (Sr., Snohomish), who finished 10th. "It will be nice when we get our whole team together," said Western coach Pee Wee Halsell. "We had some high points. Ashlee (Vincent) ran very well, and Emil (Newhouse) had a big-time improvement, but we showed it was our first week also." Vincent completed the 5-kilometer course in 18:23.99 behind three University of Washington runners. Winning the race was the Huskies' Laura Hodgson in 17:40.60. Washington won with 22 points, followed by Northwest College with 44. Central Washington was third (101) in the eight-team field. Lisa Pearl (Sr., Kenmore/Inglemoor) placed 20th (19:27.37) for Western and Laura Trevellyan (Fr., Vashon) was 22nd (19:59.91). Washington also took the men's title with 19 points, taking six of the top seven places. Capturing the individual crown was the Huskies' Todd Arnold, who ran the 8-kilometer course in 25:46.74. Newhouse was clocked in 27:27.22 for the Vikings. Western's Kurt Hartmaier (Jr., Woodinville/Redmond) was 20th in 28:01.25.
