Schedule/Results | Roster | News | Archives Western's Kezes takes individual title in men's invitational section at Sundodger meet
Sept. 21, 2002
SEATTLE, Wash. - Western Washington University transfer Paul Kezes (Jr., Bellingham/Sehome) finished just two seconds off the course record in winning the men's invitational section of the 11th annual Sundodger Cross Country Meet on Saturday at Lincoln Park. Kezes paced a field made up predominately of NCAA Division I runners, completing the 8-kilometer course in 23:42. Last spring he earned NCAA II All-America honors as a 1,500-meter runner in track at Western State CO The course record of 23:40 was set by Stanford's Jonathan Riley at the 2000 Pac-10 Championship meet. Placing second behind Kezes was Club Northwest's Mike Hill in 24:10. Idaho's Jan Eitel was third in 24:15.
"After two miles he led by 20 meters and he kept stretching it out from there," said Western coach Pee Wee Halsell. "He looked real smooth. It was fun to watch someone in your uniform place first in that race." Western placed fourth among 20 teams in the women's open section with 144 points, finishing behind Northwest College, Hershey Harriers-Canada and Simon Fraser. The Vikings paced the other six Great Northwest Athletic Conference teams in the race. The GNAC Championships are slated for the same course on Oct. 26. Leading Western was Ashlee Vincent (So., Bellingham/Squalicum), who placed third in 17:44 over the 5-kilometer distance. Simon Fraser's Emilie Mondor won the race in a course record time of 16:05. The old mark was set last year when then Washington senior Sabrina Monro won in 16:06, a full 38 seconds faster than any woman previously. Monro, competing unattached, won the women's invitational section in 16:31. Host Washington won the men's invitational section team title and the Huskies finished second to Michigan in the women's division. In the women's open section, Lisa Pearl (Sr., Kenmore/Inglemoor) finished 20th for Western, Kristin Haas (So., Port Orchard/South Kitsap) 38th (18:54), Laura Trevellyan (Fr., Vashon) 44th (18:59) and Tina Stinson (Jr., Renton/Liberty) 55th (19:16). Without Kezes, Western was 18th among 25 teams in the men's open section. Emil Newhouse (Sr., Snohomish) was the top Vikings' finisher, placing 26th in 25:39.9, bettering his personal best on that course by over 30 seconds. Western was without two of its top runners, Kurt Hartmaier (Jr., Woodinville/Redmond) and Brian Brancheau (Jr., Edmonds/Edmonds-Woodway). Hartmaier has a knee injury and Brancheau is bothered by a hip flexor. Western competes at the Saint Martin's Open next Saturday (9 a.m.) at the SMC campus.
