Oct. 12, 2002
BELLINGHAM, Wash. - Western Washington University dominated its own 29th annual Viking Invitational Cross Country Meet, winning both the men's and women's team titles, on Saturday at Lake Padden Park. It was the first time that the Vikings had won the women's division and the seventh time they had taken the men's division. Western's Paul Kezes (Jr., Bellingham/Sehome), a transfer from Western State CO, took the men's individual crown, running the 10-kilometer course in 31:29, 28 seconds ahead of runner-up Nathanael Castle from Seattle Pacific. Kezes' time was 13 seconds off the course record of 31:16 set by Club Northwest's Uli Steidl in 1999. Three weeks ago, Kezes won the Division I-dominated Invitational section at the Sundodger meet. Taking the women's individual title was Cari Rampersad-Kuzyk, representing Hershey Harriers Canada, with a time of 22:13 over the 6-kilometer course. Rampersad-Kuzyk won the NAIA national cross country title three times while attending Simon Fraser University in the mid-1990s. Placing second and the top collegiate finisher was the Vikings' Ashlee Vincent (So., Bellingham/Squalicum), who was just nine seconds back at 22:21. Western won the men's division with a low score of 40 points. Central Washington was second (52), followed by Seattle Pacific (59) and Club Northwest (75). The Vikings had a winning score of 44 points in the women's division, with Central second (54), one point ahead of the Hershey Harriers (55). Seattle Pacific was fourth (66). Western's Kurt Hartmaier (Jr., Woodinville/Redmond) and Emil Newhouse (Sr., Snohomish) were eighth (32:59) and 11th (33:17) overall, respectively, in the men's run, and third and fourth collegiately. Completing the Vikings' counters were Brian Brancheau (Jr., Edmonds/Edmonds-Woodway) 22nd (34:44) and Jon Carwin (Fr., Kirkland/Lake Washington) 26th, 35:11. In the women's run, Western's Laura Trevellyan (Fr., Vashon) was 11th (23:29), Lisa Pearl (Sr., Kenmore/Inglemoor) 14th (23:37), Molly DePasqual (Fr., Jackson, WY/Jackson Hole) 19th (24:00), and Tina Stinson (Jr., Renton/Liberty) 20th (24:01).
