Western Washington University runners claimed the individual titles in both the men's and the women's races Saturday at the second annual Great Northwest Athletic Conference Cross Country Championships at Lincoln Park.
Ashlee Vincent (So., Bellingham/Squalicum) won the women's race for the second consecutive year and Paul Kezes (Jr., Bellingham/Sehome) took the men's race. But the Vikings were third in the team standings for the women and fourth for the men, as Humboldt State won the women's title for the second consecutive year and Alaska Anchorage captured the men's championship.
Alaska Anchorage won the men's race with 70 points, just two points ahead of Humboldt State, Western Oregon was third at 86 and Western had 102. In the women's race, Humboldt State was well in front with 49 points. Central was second at 78, 14 points ahead of Western.
Vincent completed the 6-kilometer course in 21:44.89, two minutes faster than her time in last year's championships at Anchorage, Alaska. Kari Gosnell of Humboldt State was second in 21:55.21, and Alicen Maier of Central Washington was third at 22:08.75.
Kezes won in 24:20.85, nearly 20 seconds ahead of Humboldt State's Pete Clusener (24:40.13). Sean Rivers of Alaska Anchorage was third in 24:43.12.
"Paul (Kezes) and Ashlee (Vincent) both ran super races," Western coach Pee Wee Halsell said. "That was a real highlight for us."
Kezes and Vincent were named GNAC men's and women's cross country Athletes-of-the-Year, with Kezes, a transfer from Western State, Colo., also being named men's Newcomer-of-the-Year. Kelly Cronin of Humboldt State, who finished seventh (22:31.62), was named women's Newcomer-of-the-Year.
Vincent and Kezes were the only Western runners to place in the top 10. For the women, Laura Trevellyan (Fr., Vashon) placed 13th in 22:52.85 to gain GNAC-Freshman-of-the-Year honors, and Lisa Pearl (Sr., Kenmore/Inglemoor) was 14th in 22:56.70.
For the men, Kurt Hartmaier (Jr., Woodinville/Redmond) was 16th in 25:49.32, and Emil Newhouse (Sr., Snohomish) was just 0.27 seconds further back in 17th.
"Our top three ran well in both races, but we waned after that," said Halsell. "We had good races, but not great races."
Western and the rest of the GNAC compete in the NCAA Division II West Region Championships at Woodward Park in Fresno, Calif., on Nov. 9.
