Schedule/Results | Roster | News | Archives Western second after first round at 3rd annual Chico State Spring Classic
March 8, 2004
CHICO, Calif. - Western Washington University had all five of its players among the top 12 and is just three strokes off the lead after first-round action Monday in the 3rd annual Chico State University Women's Golf Spring Classic being held at the Butte Creek Golf and Country Club. The second and final round is Tuesday (7:30 a.m.). The Vikings, ranked No.8 nationally in the latest Golfstat/NCAA Division II report, shot 323. They are the two-time defending tourney champions. The first-round leader by three strokes at 320 is Cal State San Marcos, rated No.11 nationally in the NAIA. Host Chico State is third at 333 among the seven participating teams. "We had solid play from everybody today," said Western coach Dean Russell. "With this being our first tournament of the spring, it took four to six holes to get our adrenalin going. "I thought we hit the ball pretty solid. To challenge Cal State San Marcos, which is a very solid team, we're going to have to chip and putt better." Western was led by Kelly White (Sr., Monroe) and Katja Trygg (So., Bainbridge Island), who both shot 8-over par 80s to tie for seventh. Candice Wagner (So., Milton/Fife) is ninth at 81, Sarah Cooper (Sr., Marysville/Archbishop Murphy) is tied for 10th at 82 and Kate Menlove (Jr., Bellevue/Interlake) is 12th at 84. Jennell French from Cal State San Marcos is the leader in medalist play at 2-over 74. The runner-up, three strokes behind at 77, is Traci Parkison from Chico State.
