CHICO, Calif. - The Western Washington University women's golf team rallied from a three-shot, first-round deficit to win by one stroke in claiming its third straight championship in the third annual Chico State University Invitational Tournament which ended Tuesday at the Butte Creek Golf and Country Club.

The Vikings, ranked No.8 nationally in the latest Golfstat/NCAA Division II report, shot 313, bettering their first-day score by 10 shots, for a 36-hole total of 636. That was one stroke better than first-round leader Cal State San Marcos, rated No.11 nationally in the NAIA, which shot 317 for a 637 total.

Host Chico State was third in the seven-team tournament at 652 (319).

"I thought that we really rose to the occasion today on the back nine," said Western coach Dean Russell. "We hit some clutch shots and made some key putts.

"We feel very comfortable here on this golf course. It plays very similar to our home course. So, we went out relaxed today, feeling that we could all shoot lower, and we did by 10 shots, and that made up the difference."

Western was led by Katja Trygg (So., Bainbridge Island), who shot a 3-over par 75 to tie for third place at 155, and Candice Wagner (So., Milton/Fife) finished fifth by shooting 77 for a 158 total.

Kelly White (Sr., Monroe) tied for sixth at 161 (81), Sarah Cooper (Sr., Marysville/Archbishop Murphy) was eighth at 162 (80) and Kate Menlove (Jr., Bellevue/Interlake) tied for 13th at 166 (82).

Stephanie Segura from Cal State San Marcos took the individual title with a birdie on the fourth hole of a sudden death playoff. She shot 78 to tie at 162 with Morgan Peterson from Chico State, who had the low round of the day at 73.

Western takes a week off before competing in the Texas A&M University-Commerce Invitational on March 22-23.
