Box Score

BELLINGHAM, Wash. - Forward Emily Frankland (So., Sammamish/Skyline) had a goal and assist in a span of 9:33 midway through the second half as Western Washington University upset nationally ranked Cal State Dominguez Hills, 2-0, in a non-conference women's soccer contest Monday afternoon at Orca Field on the Whatcom CC campus.

The Vikings improved to 2-1-0, while CSUDH, ranked No.13 nationally in the preseason poll, fell to 1-1-0.

Western snapped a scoreless tie in the 66th minute when Frankland took a shot from 15 yards that deflected off Claire Morgan (So., Bellingham) to Lucy Miller (Jr., Palisades, CA), who tapped it in from five yards.

Nine minutes later, Frankland took a pass from Jenny Barton (Jr., Boise, ID/Borah) turned and scored on a shot from 18 yards out.

The Vikings, who had a 12-2 shot advantage in the second half, had four other solid scoring chances in the period, two on shots by Kelly Irving (Jr., Gig Harbor) and another by Miller.

CSUDH controlled play in the first half, Jessica Murphy missing wide-left from 10 yards in the first minute and Danille Shoemaker having a shot deflect off the crossbar from 15 yards in the 32nd minute.

"The back four defenders and our goalie really played outstanding in holding them in check," said Western coach Travis Connell. "Offensively, Frankland was rewarded for the three great games she's played (over the weekend) with a goal and assist."

Western, which finished with a 16-8 shot advantage and a 5-2 edge in corner kicks, got two saves from goalkeeper Kylie Broadbent (Sr., Spokane/Lewis & Clark). Alyssa Congdon had five saves for CSUDH.

The Vikings, who closed out a season-opening three-game home stand, are on the road to face Sonoma State on Sunday, Sept. 7 (12 noon).
