BELLINGHAM, Wash. - Western Washington University senior midfielder Kelly Irving (Gig Harbor) and sophomore defender Alicia Patten (Seattle/Holy Names Academy) were unanimous first-team choices on the Great Northwest Athletic Conference women's soccer all-star team announced today.

Irving tied for the GNAC lead in assists with eight and tied a school career record that had stood for 25 years with a four-year total of 26 assists.

Irving and Patten helped the Vikings rank second in both goals against average at 1.05 per game and shutouts with nine.

Four Western players selected to the second team were senior goalkeeper Kylie Broadbent (Spokane/Lewis & Clark), senior midfielder Kasey Hostetler (Richland/Hanford), senior defender Brynn Regan (Mercer Island) and junior forward Molly Shannon (Bellingham).

Broadbent was second among league leaders in both goals against average at 0.77 and shutouts with eight.

Three Vikings received honorable mention. They were junior forward Emily Frankland (Sammamish/Skyline), senior midfielder Stephanie Janigo (Bellingham), and junior forward Claire Morgan (Bellingham).

Seattle Pacific forward Jocelyn Charette was the GNAC Player of the Year, and the Falcon's Chuck Sekyra and Saint Martin's Rob Walker tied for GNAC Coach of the Year honors.

Western Oregon forward Rachelle Kliewer was the GNAC Newcomer of the Year, and Montana State Billings forward Jaucelyn Richter was the GNAC Freshman of the Year.

The Vikings finished 11-4-4 overall, going unbeaten in their final seven games (5-0-2), and placed second in the GNAC at 8-1-3 despite a win and a tie in their two meetings with league champion Seattle Pacific.

Women's Soccer: SPU's Charette Voted Player of the Year in GNAC

SPOKANE, Wash. --- Seattle Pacific forward Jocelyn Charette has been selected the 2009 Great Northwest Athletic Conference Women's Soccer Player-of-the-Year.

Charette led the conference in scoring with 37 points on 15 goals and seven assists. She ranks seventh all-time in career scoring in the GNAC with 87 points.

SPU's Chuck Sekyra and Rob Walker of Saint Martin's tied in the voting for the GNAC Coach-of-the-Year award.

It is the fifth GNAC Coach-of-the-Year award for Sekyra. The 1989 graduate of Seattle Pacific, who has a record of 134-14-11 in seven years, also won the prize in 2003, 2004, 2005 and 2007. Sekyra guided the Falcons to a 16-3-1 record this season and to their fifth GNAC title during his seven-year tenure.

Walker's team finished 12-7, posting their first winning season during their short three-year soccer history. In the two previous seasons, the Saints had won a grand total of just eight games. On Monday, Walker was also named the GNAC Men's Soccer Coach-of-the-Year.

Also winning special awards were Rachelle Kliewer of Western Oregon and Jaucelyn Richter of Montana State Billings.

Kliewer, who finished fifth in the conference in scoring with 19 points (8 goals, 3 assists), was voted the GNAC Newcomer-of-the-Year. Richter earned GNAC Freshman-of-the-Year honors. She finished her inaugural collegiate campaign with 10 goals and eight assists, tying for second in the conference in scoring.

Charette was among five unanimous selections to the GNAC all-star team. Also elected unanimously were Saint Martin's forward Jill Webb, Western Washington midfielder Kelly Irving and defenders Taylor Sawyer of Seattle Pacific and Alicia Patten of Western Washington. Three players - Charette, Webb and Irving - were repeat selections from last year.

Conference champion Seattle Pacific placed a league-best five players on the all-conference first team. Saint Martin's and Western Washington had two each, while Montana State Billings, Central Washington and Western Oregon all had one.
