BELLINGHAM, Wash. - Pitcher Erin Martin tossed a one-hit shutout as Seattle University defeated Western Washington University, 1-0 in eight innings, to open a Great Northwest Athletic Conference softball doubleheader Tuesday at Viking Field on the WWU campus.

The Vikings fell to 23-20 overall and 10-9 in league play, suffering their fifth loss in seven games.

Seattle improved to 32-11 overall and is second in the GNAC standings at 14-5.

Martin (21-4) allowed just three Western base runners, retiring 11 straight during one stretch, and struck out six.

The Vikings' Jenna Mohrweis (Fr., Mill Creek/Jackson) was hit by a pitch twice, running her season school-record total to 11, and Meghan Flem (So., Hood River, OR/Hood River Valley) got their only hit, a one-out single in the seventh inning.

Western's Sarah McEnroe (So., Woodinville) (4-10) matched Martin's effort for the first seven innings before giving up an unearned run. She scattered six hits, all singles, walked one and struck out three.

Seattle scored the game's only run in the eighth. Katie Gould led off with an infield single and went to second on a ground out. She advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored when the catcher's throw to third deflected off her batting helmet.

Brenda Stice had two hits for the Redhawks.
