April 29, 2008
BELLINGHAM, Wash. - Seattle University pitcher Erin Martin tossed a one-hit shutout in the opener and the Redhawks had back-to-back five-run innings to begin the nightcap in sweeping Western Washington University, 1-0 in eight innings and 10-0 in five innings, in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference softball doubleheader Tuesday at Viking Field on the WWU campus. The defending champion Vikings fell to 23-21 overall and 10-10 in league play. They have lost six of their last eight games. Seattle improved to 33-11 overall and is now tied for first place in the GNAC standings at 15-5 with Western Oregon. In the first game, Martin (21-4) allowed just three Western base runners, retiring 11 straight during one stretch, and struck out six. The Vikings' Jenna Mohrweis (Fr., Mill Creek/Jackson) was hit by a pitch twice, running her season school-record total to 11, and Meghan Flem (So., Hood River, OR/Hood River Valley) got the only hit, a one-out line drive single in the seventh inning. Western's Sarah McEnroe (So., Woodinville) (4-10) matched Martin's effort for the first seven innings before giving up an unearned run. She scattered six hits, all singles, walked one and struck out three. Seattle scored the game's only run in the eighth. Katie Gould led off with an infield single and went to second on a ground out. She advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored when the catcher's throw to third deflected off her batting helmet. Brenda Stice had two hits for the Redhawks. In the second contest, Seattle scored five runs in both the first and second innings. Lauren Berin had a two-run double in the first and Kaha Weir a three-run double in the second. Redhawk pitcher Kelsey Reynolds (12-6) allowed just four hits, singles by Michelle Wrigley (Fr., Bothell/Inglemoor), Liza Teichler (Sr., Sammamish/Skyline), Flem and Samantha Rutherford (Fr., Kenmore/Inglemoor). Gould was 3-for-3 and drove in two runs to lead the 12-hit Seattle attack. Megan MacIssac, Sandra Hernandez and Jaimi Foote each had two hits. After the Redhawks had scored 10 runs in the first 1-1/3 innings, McEnroe came in for the Vikings and pitched 3-2/3 innings of scoreless relief. Western next travels to Saint Martin's University on Thursday (2 p.m.) for a GNAC doubleheader. |
