Schedule/Results | Roster | News | Archives Western's Evans fourth after first day of heptathlon at GNAC Multi-Events meet
April 24, 2003
MONMOUTH, Ore. - Western Washington University's LeAnne Evans (So., Steilacoom) is fourth among 10 competitors in the heptathlon going into final-day action Friday at the Great Northwest Athletic Conference Multi-Events meet being held at McArthur Field. With 2,277 points, Evans is well behind first-day leader Danielle Ayers-Stamper of Seattle Pacific, who has a four-event total of 2,952. But Evans is within range of Seattle Pacific's Linda Blake, who is second with 2,511 points; and host Western Oregon's Bridge Johnson, who is third with 2,506 points. "She's still got a shot to move up to second place, but she's got to get after it," said Western coach Pee Wee Halsell. "She started off okay, but the high jump kind of got her." The Vikings' Jackie McCall (Fr., Spokane/Medical Lake) is sixth with 2,125 points and Nena Dodge (Jr., Bow/Burlington-Edison) is ninth with 1,311 points. Evans had the third-best time of 16.82 in the 100 meters, but was seventh in the high jump, clearing 4-6 1/4. She had the fifth-best mark in the shot put (33-2) and was fourth in the 200 (27.99). Seattle Pacific's Laura Widman, who earned All-America honors in 1999 and 2000, is seventh with 2,087 points. She has been bothered by injuries this spring. McCall ran a 17.68 100, had marks of 4-8 3/4 in the high jump and 28-4 1/4 in the shot put, and a 28.30 clocking in the 200. Dodge had a 100 time of 19.05, then no-heighted in the high jump, before throwing 24-4 1/2 in the shot put and running a 29.17 200. "All three of them worked themselves somewhat into a hole," Halsell said, "but if they work hard, they can get out of it." Friday's events include the long jump, javelin and 800. Points for the final six places will be applied towards the team totals at the GNAC track and field championships at Ellensburg, Wash, on May 3.
