Vikings' Evans second after first day in heptathlon at WWU/Spring Forward Multi-Events meet

BELLINGHAM, Wash. - Western Washington University's LeAnne Evans (So., Steilacoom) is a close second behind University of Washington's Kendra Caprye in the heptathlon and Central Washington University's Chris Peterson leads the decathlon after first-day action Sunday at the WWU/Spring Forward Multi-Events meet being held at Bellingham's Civic Stadium.

Evans has 2,417 points after four heptathlon events, just 69 behind Caprye (2,486). Evans ran the 100 meters in 16.85 (614), cleared 4-10 3/4 (610) in the high jump, had a mark of 34-3 (558) in the shot put and was clocked in 27.95 (635) in the 200. Her 100 time was the best of the day, and she had the second-best 200 clocking.

Caprye had the top mark in the high jump (5-4 1/2, 783), the second-best effort in the shot put (35-8 1/4, 587) and the third-best performance in the 200 (28.60, 584).

Carol West (unattached) is third (2,383), followed by Western's Jackie McCall (Fr., Spokane/Medical Lake) (2,141), who had the best time in the 200 of 27.86.

Seattle Pacific University's Laura Widman is fifth (2,038), Western's Nena Dodge (Jr., Bow/Burlington-Edison) sixth (1,239) and Central's Amanda von Jentzen seventh (907). Widman had the best mark of 38-2 3/4 in the shot put.

Peterson leads the decathlon after five events with 3,306 points. Michael Morrison (unattached) is second (3,192), followed by Central's Cresap Watson (3,087), Josh Freeman (unattached) (3,066), Seattle Pacific's Jason Radel (2,527) and Central's Curt Moon (1,444).

Peterson had the best marks in the long jump (20-8 1/2) and shot put (37-6 3/4), Morrison the top times in the 100 (11.42) and 400 (50.57), and Watson cleared a best of 6-2 3/4 in the high jump.

Competition begins at 9 a.m. Monday. The three remaining heptathlon events are the long jump, javelin and 800. The five events left in the decathlon are the 110 hurdles, discus, pole vault, javelin and 1,500.
