Schedule/Results | Roster | News | Archives Western's Pearl breaks 11-year-old school record in first women's 10,000
April 25, 2003 EUGENE, Ore. - Running in her first 10,000-meter race, Western Washington University's Lisa Pearl (So., Kenmore/Inglemoor) set a school record with a NCAA Division II national provisional qualifying time of 37:10.77 as she placed fifth at the University of Oregon Invitational Track and Field meet Friday at Hayward Field. The Vikings' Zach Boteilho (Sr., Camas), the defending meet champion in the men's 10,000, ran a personal best and bettered his national provisional qualifying time by over 30 seconds as he finished eighth in 30:33.23. "Lisa had a phenomenal race," said Western coach Pee Wee Halsell. "She basically ran two 18:30 5,000s, with her personal best in the 5,000 being 18:07." "She ran conservatively and picked people off as she went along. She looked very smooth." Pearl, running in a field of 23 runners, bettered a school standard that had stood since 1992. The old mark of 37:23.4 was held by Kris Maraveller. Boteilho won the 10,000 at last year's Oregon meet as an unattached runner in 30:57.32. He ran nearly 24 seconds faster Friday, but the winning time in the 25-lap race was 29:57.44 by Nike Portland's Ian Solof. "Zach was running to win and he ran some laps in the low 70s and that came back to haunt him. But he bettered his personal best and ran very well." Winning the women's 10,000 in 36:33.02 was Anne Glenn from UC Davis. Twelve other Western athletes will compete in the Oregon Invite on Saturday, with the balance of the Viking squad participating in the Western Oregon University Invitational at Monmouth, Ore.
